We’re proud to announce that Philip Bontrager, lead researcher on the “DeepMasterPrint” fingerprint hack, thinks that the SureID process for high-fidelity fingerprint enrollment has multiple layers of protection against hackers. “The NYU research into DeepMasterPrint is fascinating, but it focuses on low-fidelity, smartphone-based authentication,” says Ned Hayes, our General Manager. “SureID’s system is built with patent-pending technology that prevents fraudulent activity.” Bontrager’s DeepMasterPrint uses artificial intelligence techniques to create a 3D representation of many prints, all of them derived from low-fidelity situations such as smartphone fingerprint login sensors. Bontrager agrees that the SureID solution is secured in ways that are...

“Biometric fraud!” read one headline. “Fingerprints can be faked!” said another. This past week, such headlines reigned in the world of biometrics because of a research project, sponsored by NYU, in which Philip Bontrager and colleagues created a “DeepMasterPrint” that could be used to hack some fingerprinting systems. This study received many favorable press mentions because it plays into two current fears: (1) identity theft, an all-too-common occurrence in the modern era, and (2) false humanity, or machines masquerading as humans (a common trope we see in science-fiction, from West World to Terminator and way back to Bladerunner). Stories like...

November is National Adoption month, and Saturday the 17th is National Adoption Day. Since many of us at SureID are adopted or have adopted children, this is a topic dear to our work family, and we want to encourage you to think about how adoption can be faster, easier, and better for everyone. We know that navigating the adoption process can be challenging. To help, we reached out to Michelle, a Software Engineer at our parent company, Sterling Talent Solutions. As a single mom who runs a mother’s group with over 1000 members, she knows a lot of people who...

SureID is happy to announce a research & development partnership with Robbie.AI, an innovative company that uses AI technology to provide facial recognition (identity) and emotion prediction (behavior) in natural settings and real time. Update: Read the ZDNet article about this partnership. Our joint research, which could result in the United States’ first nationwide biometrics gathering system for broad consumer-focused initiatives, is focused around our fingerprinting network. Initially, SureID may use this innovative technology to simplify the login process for our Certified Fingerprint Technicians at our existing network locations and provide an additional layer of network security. “As technology emerges and companies adopt more sophisticated...

It’s voting season, which has us thinking. Voting is essential to a democracy, the way in which your voice is heard. But at the heart of it, voting is also hard to accomplish at scale. How does any country make sure that every voice is heard fairly and equitably? There are as many potential answers to that question as there are people asking. Some countries define who gets to vote through paperwork and proof of residence. Others make people prove their eligibility with a national identity. And, interestingly, over 50 countries (as of 2016) let their citizens prove they can...

At SureID, we know that people make our company great. Today, we continue our series on the people we love to work with. Meet Shilpa, a software engineering manager at SureID. Shilpa is one of our favorite people. For one, she’s incredibly good at her job; attention to detail is second nature or, as she calls it, “a habit.” For another, she’s unfailingly kind; a quick poll around the office led me to believe that she may well be the most likeable person here. And, like so many of us, she’s in love...
