Sterling Identity wants to transform the fingerprinting industry, one customer at a time. We’ve designed the fingerprinting process to be as convenient, quick, secure, and comfortable as possible.
Here’s what you should expect when you work with Sterling Identity.
Step One: Register
The first step is registration. If you’re working with an employer, they will register you. If you are requesting the record for yourself, start your order here.
You will then get an email that contains both a QR code and a registration number and tells you what to do next.
Step Two: Go to the fingerprinting location that’s most convenient for you
Print your confirmation email or have it available on a mobile device and grab two government-issued IDs. Then go to the location indicated in your email or visit sterlingidentity.com/locations to locate a nearby center.
Verify your registration and identity
Once you get to the location, ask for the Identity Network Kiosk. Tap the screen to begin and follow the prompts to open your registration. You can:
- Scan your QR code using the station’s camera, or
- Enter the registration code manually, including dashes.
Update information if needed, then ask for a technician to verify your identity and help capture your prints.
Take Your Fingerprints
The technician will help you capture good prints, so follow their guidance. The system provides help and tutorials for both flat and rolled prints, so feel free to review them as you work through the process.

A QR code is a modern barcode graphic that contains information such as a registration code or website address. It can be read by a camera like the one on your smartphone or on our Identity Network Kiosk.
Step Three: Get Results
When all your prints have been captured, follow the prompts on screen to complete the fingerprinting process. We receive your prints and forward to the appropriate agency, and your criminal history record is sent to you or to the authorized recipient.
